Vaccinations are an integral component of responsible pet ownership. They help reduce the risk of your pet becoming seriously unwell by providing protection against life-threatening diseases. While most pets require no special care following vaccinations, a small percentage of pets may show a response.
Mild Reactions
Discomfort and local swelling at the vaccination site
Mild fever
Decreased appetite and activity
Sneezing, mild coughing, "snotty nose" or other respiratory signs may occur 2-5 days after your pet receives an intranasal vaccine
Note* If your pet displays any of the above mild reactions for more than a day or two, or cause your pet significant discomfort, it is recommended that the vet who performed the vaccine is contacted.
Care Suggestions
If your pet displays a mild reaction to a recent vaccine, the following points outline the best way to care for them:
Provide your pet with a warm, comfy place to rest. Don’t be alarmed if they choose to rest elsewhere.
Ensure they have access to water and food. Don’t be alarmed if they are not very hungry.
Avoid overstimulating your pet. They may prefer to be somewhere quiet and on their own.
Check on your pet regularly to make sure they are comfortable, disturbing them as little as possible.
Severe Reactions
If your pet displays a change in behaviour
If your pet has difficulties breathing
Severe and constant vomiting
Severe and constant diarrhea
Bumpy or itchy skin
Swelling around the eyes, face, or neck
Lameness or collapsing
Note* If your pet displays any of the above severe reactions, it is recommended that the vet who performed the vaccine is contacted. If the vet is not available, it is recommended that you seek emergency veterinarian treatment.
